Exploring therapeutic targets and molecular mechanisms of how TCM formula helps with diabetes mellitus-associated heart failure.

In this research they look at a specific TCM formula, Qishen Yiqi dropping pills, and did a genetic analysis of target genes and proteins related to diabetes-associated heart failure. This formula has only 4 herbs in it and they found 108 active compounds and 257 relevant targets. This highlights the problems with trying isolate 1 active ingredient in a plant and synthesize that into a medicine. How much of the effectiveness and safety of the treatment is based in these hundreds of links and targets and their interactions? Why not just use the whole herbs ? Money; you can’t patent and make gob-loads of money from a plant.  Link to Research.
