Looking at mechanisms of TCM herb, Radix Bupleuri, in treating subacute thyroiditis (SAT).

Dried sliced root of a TCM herb

In this research they looked at the mechanism behind Radix Bupleuri ( Chai Hu) on subacute thyroiditis.(SAT) They found 8 key active ingredients and 10 core gene targets with Chai Hu and SAT. They found these herb/gene interactions do happen and that they work by “potentially modulating SAT by regulating cell cycle progression, cellular proliferation, immune responses, and inflammatory reactions.” Interestingly this herb is very commonly used in TCM and it’s used to combat the effects of stress, anger and frustration on the body.
